NYBDC Sponsors SBIDC's Sunset Swing XII
On Thursday, May 9th, NYBDC attended Sunset Swing XIII, hosted by SBIDC (Southwest Brooklyn Industrial Development Corporation) at Gargiulo’s Restaurant, in Coney Island, NY. The night celebrated the economic growth of Southwest Brooklyn’s neighborhoods, especially in the wake of Superstorm Sandy and its devastation to businesses throughout the community.
The night’s honorees included three businesses that are dedicated to the Brooklyn community. Fairway Market, whose store in Red Hook was forced to close after Superstorm Sandy, displayed their dedication to the neighborhood by ensuring that the location’s 400 employees would not lose their jobs. They’ve donated truckloads of food, water and supplies to soup kitchens, shelters and disaster relief areas, showing their support of organizations that make a difference in the neighborhood.
The second honoree of the evening, Municipal Recycling, a staple of New York City’s curbside recycling system, processes more than 200,000 tons of plastic, glass, and metal each year and is currently in the process of constructing a new eco-conscious building to help with the City’s recycling efforts.
Long-time Red Hook residents, Monica Byrne and Leisah Swenson of Home/Made Wine Bar and Roquette Catering & Special Events, were honored, as well. They've combined their interest in civic involvement and their business of artisanal special events by organizing fundraisers and donating to non-profits throughout the community.
It was an evening that celebrated recovery, growth, and honored the distinguished businesses of Brooklyn that are continuing to thrive.
