New York Energy $mart Develops Markets for Energy Efficiency Products, Funds R&D

By Marilyn Dare

The rise in energy costs is affecting us everywhere, from our gas tanks, to our grocery carts, to home energy bills. Undoubtedly, implementing energy-efficient and cost-saving measures has become a goal for many of us; and fortunately there is help! The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) was created in 1975 as a public benefit corporation that educates and assists New Yorkers with energy-saving measures.

Marilyn Dare

Marilyn Dare has worked at NYSERDA for nine years, promoting energy efficiency in the commercial and industrial sectors. As a project manager, Marilyn manages the New York Energy $martK Loan Fund and Small Commercial Lighting Program, along with other market transformation projects at NYSERDA. She is a member of the Association of Energy Engineers, the Illuminating Engineering Society, and sits on the Commercial Lighting Committees for the Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE) and the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnership (NEEP). Prior to NYSERDA, Marilyn worked for General Electric and Westinghouse where she oversaw the procurement and construction of equipment for the Naval Nuclear Program.

Marilyn received her MBA from Union College in Schenectady and her BA from Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y.

NYSERDA's mission is to use innovation and technology to solve some of New York's most difficult energy and environmental problems in ways that improve the state's economy. NYSERDA's dedication to New York State is exemplified through the numerous programs, materials and other resources it has developed to educate residents, businesses and industries about cost-savings initiatives, energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy alternatives.

The New York Energy $mart program, administered by NYSERDA and funded by the System Benefits Charge (SBC), is designed to develop markets for energy efficiency products and services, fund the research and development of innovative energy-saving measures, provide services to low-income residents and conduct research in environmental protection. To date, more than 2,500 projects in 30 programs have been made available through the New York Energy $mart program.

The New York Energy $mart Program has created numerous economic and environmental benefits:

  • Nearly $340 million in annual energy savings by participating customers
  • 3,700 jobs annually retained or created
  • 105 GWh of annual renewable energy generation
  • 1,113 MW reduction in peak demand
  • Annual carbon dioxide reduction equivalent to 320,000 fewer cars
  • Significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
  • 2,060 tons of nitrogen oxide (NOx)
  • 3,800 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2)
  • 1.6 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2)
Additionally, NYSERDA offers services and incentives to residential and commercial customers to help promote efficiency and cost-savings measures. NYSERDA can aid New York businesses by providing incentives and interest rate reductions on loans used to implement energy-efficiency measurers and through energy audits, which can highlight ways of improving efficiency. Energy audits can be conducted to highlight areas where businesses can reduce electric demand and increase savings through efficiency improvements.

NYSERDA's Commercial/Industrial programs provide energy efficiency services for existing buildings, new construction, industrial facilities and vehicle fleets. Technical assistance and financial incentives promote the purchase and installation of cost-effective energy-efficient products and equipment, assist with the construction of energy-efficient, environmentally sustainable buildings, promote electric demand reduction and electric and gas efficiency improvements for existing building stock, and help advance the use of clean fuels in the transportation sector.

Commercial properties, which include commercial, industrial, institutional, governmental, agricultural, health-care and non-profit sectors, can qualify for reduced interest rates on loans to improve manufacturing facilities, business offices, retail storefronts or manufacturing processes. New commercial buildings that have been evaluated through the New York Energy $mart New Construction Program or qualify for Smart Equipment Choices incentives may also qualify for the Loan Fund. The maximum loan amount that may be subsidized for commercial properties is $1,000,000 plus an additional maximum of $500,000 for Green Building Improvements for a maximum of $1,500,000.

NYSERDA also offers incentives for renewable energy generation projects that include wind, sun, biomass, hydroelectricity and other clean technologies. The PowerNaturally Program promotes clean, renewable energy sources that will help to ensure a more stable energy future for New York State. As a result of NYSERDA's numerous programs, New York State is more energy-efficient and energy independent. For additional information on the various programs offered by NYSERDA, please call 1-866-NYSERDA or visit www.nyserda.org.
