New York Energy $mart Develops Markets for Energy Efficiency Products, Funds R&D By Marilyn Dare The rise in energy costs is affecting us everywhere, from our gas tanks, to our grocery carts, to home energy bills. Undoubtedly, implementing energy-efficient and cost-saving measures has become a goal for many of us; and fortunately there is help! The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) was created in 1975 as a public benefit corporation that educates and assists New Yorkers with energy-saving measures.
The New York Energy $mart program, administered by NYSERDA and funded by the System Benefits Charge (SBC), is designed to develop markets for energy efficiency products and services, fund the research and development of innovative energy-saving measures, provide services to low-income residents and conduct research in environmental protection. To date, more than 2,500 projects in 30 programs have been made available through the New York Energy $mart program. The New York Energy $mart Program has created numerous economic and environmental benefits:
NYSERDA's Commercial/Industrial programs provide energy efficiency services for existing buildings, new construction, industrial facilities and vehicle fleets. Technical assistance and financial incentives promote the purchase and installation of cost-effective energy-efficient products and equipment, assist with the construction of energy-efficient, environmentally sustainable buildings, promote electric demand reduction and electric and gas efficiency improvements for existing building stock, and help advance the use of clean fuels in the transportation sector. Commercial properties, which include commercial, industrial, institutional, governmental, agricultural, health-care and non-profit sectors, can qualify for reduced interest rates on loans to improve manufacturing facilities, business offices, retail storefronts or manufacturing processes. New commercial buildings that have been evaluated through the New York Energy $mart New Construction Program or qualify for Smart Equipment Choices incentives may also qualify for the Loan Fund. The maximum loan amount that may be subsidized for commercial properties is $1,000,000 plus an additional maximum of $500,000 for Green Building Improvements for a maximum of $1,500,000. NYSERDA also offers incentives for renewable energy generation projects that include wind, sun, biomass, hydroelectricity and other clean technologies. The PowerNaturally Program promotes clean, renewable energy sources that will help to ensure a more stable energy future for New York State. For more information on renewable energy programs, please visit http://www.powernaturally.org. As a result of NYSERDA's numerous programs, New York State is more energy-efficient and energy independent.
